Abstract:
The Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge was established in 1943 for the protection of migratory birds and sits along the Rio Grande River Valley at the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Spanning several border counties, the Santa Ana is a vital wetland habitat for numerous species of plants and animals. The Rio Grande Complex of parks and refuge areas provides potable water reserves, natural environmental filters, wildlife viewing, and education opportunities to the populations of Mexico and South Texas. The Santa Ana has and continues to face numerous obstacles including urbanization and flooding. Despite these obstacles, however, the staff and Parks Services has accomplished many goals in the preservation, restoration, and protections of natural wetland habitats. Included in the following pages is an overview of the entire Rio Grande Valley and details on the Santa Ana refuge area addressing relevant wetland concerns and providing imagery and interviews with key park staff.
